Since I can’t seem to sit still or because I’m in a creative burst of time, I’m starting a new photo project on manhood. It’s inspired by my I AM WOMAN photo essay project as well as my neighbors for the last three and half years in Milwaukee, WI.
The neighbors will have a special section in the project. I envision some simple black and white portraits with no adornments and some artistic recreations of famous artwork (they don’t know this second part yet 🤭). My most prominent idea is lounging someone on a sedan/sofa with a still-life food and fruit layout in front of them and have them pose with a bunch of grapes, in hand, over their mouth. I intend on having a blast with this project. 🤗
Mini portrait sessions for the I’M A MAN Project (working title) will kick off in Milwaukee, WI. The first two sessions open to the public for sign-up will be October 20th and 27th, from 10:00am-1:00pm. Sign up on EventBrite for a time slot. The half hour slots can accommodate 2 different registrations for fifteen-minute sessions.
Please only sign up for one slot. Multiple sign-ups will be deleted.
If you think you need more time, contact me directly with your idea/vision, and I will see if I can accommodate. I’m open to all participants’ creative ideas for their sessions.
From my time photographing women for I AM WOMAN, family and community themes were strong. If you want to shoot with friends or family, schedule adjacent time slots, if possible. That way, everyone gets their individual time, and you’re together for a group shot.
Participants will receive at least two edited digital images for their time and contribution to the project. A photo release is required for participation. Participants are not guaranteed to be published in the final project, but any image taken during this project can be used for promotional and marketing purposes. If children are part of the participant’s session, a signed photo-release will be required for the minor child (children) by their parent or guardian. (Click here for Photo Release form.)
The focus of this project is to exhibit and capture in an image the participant’s idea/expression of their manhood. What is it to be a man? How do you think of your manhood? How do you express yourself as a man? What represents you as a man? Who are you? How do you want to be known?
What one word incapulates you as an individual, as a man, as a link in the collective collage of manhood? How would you finish this phrase, “I’m a man. I’m ____________.” The word inserted here is the image I’ll seek to capture.
