Tips for a Great Mini Portrait Session

Every season is a good season for a portrait. I’m a huge fan of candid shots, but I also get a lot of pleasure from a well-composed portrait that’s beautifully captured. I’ve been blessed with some great collaborators (models, subjects, clients) in this regard. One of my core offerings is a thirty minute headshot session. This is a great service for refreshing your online image or updating profile pics or even doing a test run on a new branding idea.

Here, I’d like to share some tips to get the best results in front of the camera, especially in a short amount of time.

  1. This is a mini portrait/headshot session because the estimated time in front of the camera will average between 15-20 minutes. Come prepared to work it from the beginning in order to get your best shot! I offer suggestions on poses, outfit adjustments for different looks, and make-up changes if applicable.
  2. It’s best to have an idea in mind of how you want the images to turn out. Reference images are helpful, think vision board or flipbook. These can generally be shared pre-shoot. Give yourself time to feel out the space so you’re as comfortable as possible posing how you want.
  3. Think about how you want to represent yourself. Who is your audience? What is your goal? What will the images be used for? Did you book enough time to convey what you want to convey?
  4. Be natural. Be you.
  5. If you’re efficient, the headshot session can accommodate at least two outfits. Or you can layer/delayer for multiple looks.
  6. If you wear make-up bring something to touch-up with. As well as something to cover your face if you have an outfit change.
  7. Bring a lentfree towel to pat away perspiration and shine.
  8. Plan for comfort. If you are uncomfortable in your skin or clothes, you will look uncomfortable in the photos.
  9. Props are welcome. If you want to bring something to add aesthetically to your session, you are welcome to. Make sure it’s something that represents how you see yourself or want to present yourself.
  10. I enjoy shooting outside in natural light, but have a small home studio with backdrops. Use location and time to your advantage. There’s no guarantee that the background/location will be identifiable, but the space may provide inspiration for your session.

I look forward to creating great images with you!
