Black Advocacy Day at the Capitol
On February 29, 2024, the Black Legislative Action Coalition Wisconsin (BLACWI) hosted Black Advocacy Day at the Capitol in Madison, WI.
The goal of the day was to bring community members to the State Capitol to engage with legislators and community leaders. To this end, they provided a chartered coach from Milwaukee to Madison. In addition to a fantastic program of workshops, panel discussions, advocacy training. and speeches by Black Legislators, the keynote speaker was Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba of Jackson, MS.
After a full day at the Capitol, we hopped back on the bus and headed to the Govenor’s Mansion for a reception hosted by Governor Tony Evers and Mrs. Evers in our honor for Black History Month. Governor Evers gave the second keynote of the day. All told, we were feted with good company, engaging conversation, edifying information, breakfast snacks, a tasty boxed lunch and a catered soul food dinner with cocktails. I’m hard-pressed to think of a comparable event that flowed so seamlessly and was as enjoyable.
Below are pictures from the day.
