This will be my fourth photo meetup at Northern Lights Studio. I love this event and I’ve netted some fantastic images for my body of work.

I met James and Steven at the first photo meetup in January 2024. They were invited to participate in my I AM A MAN photo series that summer and delivered great images.

I went to the May 2025 event with the goal of updating my author headshot. #score

You don’t need to be a model or professional photographer to participate. I would suggest you come with an idea of what kind of images you want. There’s no guarantee you’ll receive anything or anything close to what you want, but having an idea to work towards will help.

Bring an outfit change and accessories (hat, coat, scarf, different hair, sword, etc) to change up your look.

Walk the space to identify locations you’d like to shoot in.

I’ve photographed in the studio, wrap-around patio, upstairs lounge, downstairs bar, and outside near the water.

This event gets super crowded. Even as a familiar face, it took me all night to shoot with the photographer I wanted for my author shots. Granted, she was also running the event. But trying to secure her attention meant I missed opportunities to photograph people and to be photographed by other photographers.

Be flexible and persistent. The regulars will have their eye on people and may monopolize them. Steven has grabbed me each time. And we spend a good chunk of time together. I love his look. I love the images we create together. But I want more than Steven in my portfolio.

This event is teaching me to edit myself and my time. I shoot with a digital full frame. I can capture 400 images in 10-15 min. The clicking feels good in the moment, but the sorting and selecting is always a chore. I’ve left each event with 3000-4000 images to review. Generally speaking, I send no less than 10 edited images to the models and a few more unedited if I like them.

That’s too much unpaid time and labor. And it takes me months to get through them all and send them out. I would like to be more timely.

This time, I’m going in with the mindset  of shooting with film. Moderate clicks. Make each image count. Shoot a few. Send a couple.

I don’t really need more images for my portfolio, but I will be there enjoying the creative fusion on November 7!

Looking forward to seeing some new faces!
